Srinagar, July 04: Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former minister Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen has expressed his disappointment over the “poor performance” of the Tourism Development Authorities (TDAs) of Tossamaidan, Doodhpathri, and Yusmarg.
Despite being established in 2004, these TDAs have failed to develop the necessary tourism infrastructure at these locations, Yaseen said in a statement issued here. He said that many tourists are eager to visit these pristine tourist spots but are disheartened by the lack of adequate facilities.
He criticised the tourism department for its “failure” to standardise rates for pony wallahs at these tourist destinations, which allows unscrupulous elements to overcharge tourists. “The entry tickets are set arbitrarily by bidders, causing shock and dismay among visitors. It is perplexing why entry fees are collected at three different points from tourists at Doodhpathri,” he said, urging the TDA to abolish this burdensome practice immediately.
The former minister condemned the TDAs at Tossamaidan, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg for their “inability” to establish tourist infrastructure for the convenience of visitors, claiming that these authorities exist only on paper. He said there is poor condition of roads and power supply at these tourist sites, which further disappoints tourists.
“If the government does not improve basic facilities at these locations, it could lead to a decline in tourist arrivals, adversely affecting the livelihoods of the local population” he said, adding, “Building adequate tourist infrastructure at Tossamaidan, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg to ensure better tourist influx is crucial for providing livelihood to the local people. The government and the tourism department must reactivate these tourism development authorities.”
The PDF chairman also demanded the construction of the Gondola project and a golf course at Doodhpathri, which were approved in 2006. “These projects would enhance recreational facilities for tourists and create more livelihood opportunities for the locals. Similarly, the Gondola project from Nilnag to Yusmarg and Dragtollan was surveyed and approved, but the concerned authorities have put these vital tourist projects on the back burner,” he said.
Hakeem called for the appointment of dedicated officers as CEOs of these TDAs. “Individuals with a strong background in tourism are needed to revitalise these authorities effectively,” he said.
