CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre is “probable” for WWE SummerSlam.
Punk has been out of action with a torn triceps suffered in the men’s Royal Rumble match in January. He still hasn’t been cleared to return to the ring but WWE is feeling more confident that he’ll be ready in time for this summer’s big event in Cleveland. The situation was addressed by our own Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio.
“Right now, it is not 100 percent as far as Punk and Drew at SummerSlam, but I was told it is probable,” Meltzer said. “Punk was kind of asked about it and he kind of beat around the bush and he kind of said, I mean, it’s probably happening but he kind of did say it’s up to other people, he has to get cleared and everything by the doctors.”
“I was pretty much told they’re pretty confident in it but you can’t go and say 100 percent because it ain’t 100 percent. It’s been the hope, but it’s now more than a hope, now it’s a plan, Drew McIntyre and Punk for SummerSlam.”
Punk was asked about his recovery during the press conference but would not give away much regarding his status.
“I like to keep people in suspense,” he responded. “I will say that I feel great and I’m ready to go, and there are things in place to protect me against myself that I maybe wish were in place ten years ago, but we don’t need to talk about the past.”
“I’m busting my ass to get back. If I could steal what John was talking about, for the fans. Because whether you think he’s more or less polarizing than me, whether you hate me or love me, I’m coming back to enjoy all these moments that were robbed from me when I got injured.”
“Shit happens, it’s a contact sport. It stinks but I’ve been working very, very hard to rush the rehab and come back. And everybody behind me has supported it, but they’ve also been like, ‘We’re not in a hurry.’ And I love that.”
More notes from CM Punk at the press conference:
Punk was asked about John Cena, and responded:
“Cena, to my career, means a lot. I don’t think there’s many people up in that rare air where if you talk about my career, I feel you have to talk about John and it makes me feel proud that I think if you talk about John’s career I think you have to talk about me. We’re married in that respect. I’m proud of him, he gets to go out on his terms, I know that’s important. I’m looking forward to what he does and I told him that if it’s going to be one more time, we’ve got to do it at least one more time.”
Punk was also asked about his wife, AJ Lee, possibly returning to WWE. He responded that it was a question best asked to her and that she is busy writing and with her production company. Punk did say, however, that as a fan he “would love to see it.”
“She’s got so many irons in so many fires. I will say as a fan of hers, would love to see it,” Punk said.
