EDITOR’S NOTE — Feb. 18, 8 a.m.: Environment Canada has removed the “winter weather travel advisory” that was in effect Monday night for much of the GTA.
The snow may not be over for the GTA after all, including for Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Oshawa and Newmarket.
Much of the GTA including Toronto, Peel, Durham and York regions have been placed under a “winter weather travel advisory in effect beginning overnight” Monday into Tuesday.
“Light lake effect flurries will continue this evening followed by a band of heavier snow moving in overnight,” stated Environment Canada in its late Monday afternoon advisory for Toronto. “This heavier band of snow will persist into Tuesday morning and impact the morning commute.
“There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.
“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
It says the area could be hit with “local snow amounts of 4 to 8 centimetres” with “reduced visibility in snow.”
The late afternoon advisory did not extend westward to Halton and Hamilton regions.
The GTA advisories did have slightly different alerts, so check your own community, for instance the advisory for Newmarket (which also included Georgina and northern York Region) called for slightly higher amounts of snow — five to 10 centimetres.
So check the advisory for your own community. The links for the major GTA communities are listed above (and you can also follow one of those links and put your own community in the prompt).
You can also check the Environment Canada forecast for your community through the link. Basically it’s cold with a low of -12 C forecast for Pearson Airport overnight and only a high of -6 C on Tuesday.
