League One side Wigan Athletic have signed former Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett on a short-term contract until early January.

The 33-year-old came through Premier League side Newcastle’s youth system and spent 14 years at St James’ Park before departing as a free agent at the end of last season.

He made 213 appearances for the Magpies, including 151 in the top flight.

“Signing for Wigan Athletic is something I’m delighted to do,” Dummett told the club website.

“It’s a club with rich history and a brilliant, young squad that I can hopefully help progress up the league during my time here.”
