A Champions League debut is always special but Arne Engels will remember his for Celtic against Slovan Bratislava with genuine fondness.
The midfielder became a club-record signing for Brendan Rodgers’ side this summer and has now produced a star turn on Europe’s elite stage.
He began early by providing an assist as Liam Scales broke the deadlock for the Scottish champions from a 17th-minute corner delivered by Engels.
That was followed up in the second half by wrongfooting Dominik Takáč from the penalty spot after Alistair Johnston had been brought down.
Engels has now joined Bhoys’ all-time great Henrik Larsson in becoming the club’s first player to score and assist in a Champions League fixture.
Talk about illustrious company!
