Thorpedo Anna has all but clinched the Eclipse Award as the
top 3-year-old filly of 2024. She will try to cross the equine gender barrier
Saturday, bidding to become the first filly in more than a century to win the
Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga.
The 1 1/4-mile race billed as the mid-summer derby also drew
Dornoch, the Belmont Stakes and Haskell (G1) winner who is regarded widely as
the division leader among 3-year-old males.
There are 15 graded stakes and the rescheduled King’s Plate at
five tracks in the U.S. and Canada this week. Seven of them will be at Saratoga
starting Thursday.
Thursday
Ballston Spa (G2), Saratoga, 1 1/16 miles (turf), fillies
and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Chad Brown, who has trained a record seven Ballston Spa winners,
has four of the five entrants in the main draw this week. Grade 1 winner Beauté
Cachée cuts back from a victory in the 1 1/8-mile Matchmaker (G3) last month at
Monmouth Park. Her stablemate Delahaye was third in the same race. Gina
Romantica came in third and Coppice fifth in the Diana (G1) over the same
course and distance last month. Surprisingly, fourth in the Matchmaker, is in for trainer Todd Pletcher. Hoosier Philly, Movie Moxy and Amanda’s Folly were entered for the main track only.

Friday
Personal Ensign (G1), Saratoga, 1 1/8 miles, fillies and
mares, 4-year-olds and up
In a field of only five, archrivals Idiomatic and Randomized
will get most of the betting attention in this rematch. The reigning champion
in the older dirt female division, Idiomatic won the 2023 Personal Ensign.
Among her victims in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last fall was Randomized, who
got even June 8 when she beat Idiomatic by a head in the Ogden Phipps (G1).
That race, like Friday’s, covered 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga. That was the only
loss in the last 15 months for Idiomatic, who was a surprisingly narrow victor
last month in the Molly Pitcher (G3) at Monmouth Park.

Charles Town Classic (G2), Charles Town, 1 1/8 miles,
3-year-olds and up
After mixing it up in Grade 1 company in his last two starts,
well-traveled Skippylongstocking returns to this $1 million race that he won
last year by five lengths. The 5-year-old Exaggerator entire trained by Saffie
Joseph Jr. is coming off top-level tests that resulted in a third in the
Stephen Foster and a weakening fifth less than three weeks ago in the Whitney.
Where Tyler Gaffalione rode last year, José Ortiz will have the assignment
Friday night on Skippylongstocking.

3-year-old fillies
Joseph brings double-barreled action into this $750,000 race
with Mystic Lake and Haulin Ice. Before finishing second July 4 in the Victory
Ride (G3) at Aqueduct, Mystic Lake won her last three dirt starts, all stakes,
including the Miss Preakness (G3) on the Black-Eyed Susan undercard at Pimlico.
Haulin Ice impressed last month with a 9 1/2-length runaway in the
seven-furlong Azalea at Gulfstream Park.

King’s Plate, Woodbine, 1 1/4 miles (synthetic),
Canada-bred 3-year-olds
After heavy rain Saturday forced postponement of the first 2024 classic
north of the border, this field was expected to remain intact. Mark Casse, the
16-time champion trainer in Canada, has the top two choices on the morning
line. My Boy Prince (7-5) won the Plate Trial on July 20 for his third victory
in a row, all in stakes, and is 6-for-8 at Woodbine. Lightly raced Essex
Serpent (2-1) did not make his debut until April, but his June 29 victory in
the Marine (G3) was worthy of an 89 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily
Racing Form.

King Edward (G2), Woodbine, 1 mile (turf), 3-year-olds
and up
Casse also has the favorite in the rescheduled King Edward.
Filo Di Arianna (4-5), a Brazil-bred 8-year-old gelding, has been judiciously
raced to a 16: 8-3-1 record. He scored in seven of his first nine starts
including the 2022 edition of this race. Then he got the yips, going winless in
his next six before finishing first June 29 in the six-furlong Highlander (G2)
on the Woodbine grass. Stretching back to a mile, the son of Drosselmeyer is
4-for-4 on the turf at Woodbine.

3-year-olds and up
Patches O’Houlihan (7-5) assuredly is a horse for the
course, winning 7 of 8 at Woodbine including last year’s Bold Venture and two
graded stakes. After eight months on trainer Robert Tiller’s bench, the
4-year-old Reload gelding looked anything but rusty July 28. That was when he
ran away to a six-length win against Ontario-sired rivals in the six-furlong Pink
Lloyd Stakes over the same Woodbine Tapeta where Friday’s rescheduled race will
be run.

Travers (G1), Saratoga, 1 1/4 miles, 3-year-olds
Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Thorpedo Anna has won 6 of 7 but is facing males for the first time. She is trying to be the first filly to
win the Travers since Lady Rotha did it 109 years ago. Dornoch assumed division
leadership among 3-year-old colts and geldings on the strength of his wins in
the Haskell (G1) and before that in the Belmont Stakes over the same course and
distance he will run Saturday.

28 in the Bowling Green going 1 3/8 miles on the Saratoga green.

won the True North (G2) by six, tries to rebound from his distant fourth in the
Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1). Gun Pilot took the seven-furlong Churchill Downs

H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1), Saratoga, 7 furlongs,
3-year-olds
When it comes to speed figures, this field is an
embarrassment of triple-digit riches. Jefferson Street has the best Beyer Speed
Figure in these past performances, according to Daily Racing Form. He
earned a 102 for his June 7 allowance win at Saratoga. He was upset last month
in the Amsterdam (G2) by World Record, who comes in with a 101 for that effort.
Book ’em Danno has a pair of 100-pluses. One of them came in his Woody Stephens
(G1) victory over Prince of Monaco, who ships back to test him again. Domestic
Product, Little Ni and Speak Easy also are in the 100 club.

Pat O’Brien (G2), Del Mar, 7 furlongs, 3-year-olds and up,
Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile automatic qualifier
Save room for this dessert of a race that already has
attracted three star-worthy probables, according to the Del Mar racing office.
The Chosen Vron, who took his second straight Bing Crosby (G1) to run his
winning streak to six, will face his stiffest challenge of the year. Señor
Buscador, who had been considered for the Pacific Classic (G1) on Aug. 31, will
go instead in this race, trainer Todd Fincher confirmed Sunday. Last year’s
Pacific Classic winner Arabian Knight would be looking to improve for Bob
Baffert from a fourth-place effort in the 1 1/16-mile San Diego Handicap (G2),
his first race off a nearly nine-month break.

Canadian Derby (G2), Century Mile, 1 1/4 miles,
3-year-olds
Bricklayer, who won the Manitoba Derby on Aug. 5, was not
nominated for what was intended to be the second jewel of the Western Canadian
Derby Series. That was before Assiniboia Downs was put under quarantine for
equine anemia. So the Manitoba Derby was removed from the series, the US$73,000
sweep bonus was dropped, and Saturday’s race in Edmonton will be the first of
two jewels with the B.C. Derby (G3) on Sept. 14 at Hastings being the second.
The Century Mile racing office did not provide probable starters, but Manitoba
Derby runner-up McEwen could be in the mix. Workout patterns suggest Classic
City, a two-time stakes winner at the track, is a possibility for Saturday’s
US$146,000 race.

Sunday
Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3), Del Mar, 6 1/2 furlongs,
fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Sweet Azteca, who could have gone to the Ballerina (G1) at
Saratoga, is staying home in Southern California for this race that is a class drop from her five-length triumph in the Great Lady M (G2)
at Los Alamitos. The 4-year-old daughter of Sharp Azteca won the Beholder Mile (G1)
in March at Santa Anita. Only a third-place result on New Year’s Day in the Las
Flores (G3), also at Santa Anita, has spoiled her otherwise perfect record.
