New Delhi: Four people, including two women, were arrested for allegedly duping many on the pretext of sending them to Canada on ‘cheap’ visas. They used to post advertisements on social media, luring people with promises of arranging visas at lower costs. They also promised to secure jobs in Canada for the applicants.
The accused were identified as Gaurav (28), Nitin Sharma (33), Sarabjeet Kaur (29) and Gagandeep (32), from Punjab and Haryana.Deputy commissioner of police (IGIA) Usha Rangnani said that on Sept 28, one Kuldeep (21) from Haryana’s Jind was arrested after a fake Canadian visitor visa was found affixed on his passport. A case was registered.
One of his brothers had earlier gone to Canada for a better livelihood, prompting Kuldeep to try the same route. He subsequently met an agent named Sandeep, who assured him he could arrange his journey to Canada with the help of an associate in exchange for Rs 18 lakh. Sandeep also told Kuldeep that he would also apply for a Canadian visa for his mother to increase the chances of approval. Kuldeep gave the agent Rs 5 lakh in cash as an advance, with the remaining payment to be made upon reaching the destination.
Kaur and Gagandeep used to post advertisement videos on their social media accounts claiming to “guarantee Canadian visas even in refusal cases”. These posts included their phone numbers, enticing people seeking Canadian visas to contact them. While Gaurav operated as an agent, Sharma worked as an immigration agent in Mohali.
