Gas prices snapped six straight weeks of declines in Canada, as the nationwide average for regular fuel added 0.7 cents per litre between Sept. 12 and Sept. 19, according to data from Kalibrate.
North Bay, Ont. and Edmonton saw the biggest price increases, at 11.9 cents and 9.8 cents per litre, respectively. Quebec and the Maritimes saw broad-based declines, led by Val-d’Or, Que. and Sussex, N.B.
Looking back to August, Statistics Canada data show falling gasoline prices put downward pressure on inflation. Canada’s annual inflation rate fell to two per cent, the slowest pace of price increases since February 2021. StatCan says August was also the third monthly decrease in four months.
“The decline in August 2024 was mainly due to lower crude oil prices amid economic concerns in the United States and slowing demand in China,” the federal agency said on Tuesday.
North American benchmark crude prices (CL=F) are down about 17 per cent from the highs reached in early April.
