GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed elimination of the existing ceiling system that limits remuneration for Village Defence Party (VDP) volunteers. The change aims to expedite payments and ensure that VDP members receive timely and fair compensation for their critical services.

A high-powered meeting chaired by Sarma and which included the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Assam Police, on Sunday, June 30, discussed crucial issues affecting the VDP, and key infrastructure projects across the state.
Furthermore, Sarma emphasised the importance of prompt procurement of necessary items for VDP to enhance their operational effectiveness.
In a separate agenda, Sarma reviewed proposals to remove budgetary ceilings on significant infrastructure projects managed by the state government. He stressed that lifting these financial constraints is essential to prevent delays and to ensure the timely completion of vital Public Works Department (PWD) projects.

Sarma instructed officials to expand the list of projects eligible for ceiling-free status, aiming to maximise the number of infrastructure initiatives that can be completed within their designated timelines.
