The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast for Saturday night shows that northern lights (aurora borealis) will be seen in several parts of Canada, including Ontario. A similar show was spotted in the clear skies of the country on Friday. Now, the agency’s forecast map shows auora probablity in most of Canada.
“This is a prediction of the intensity and location of the aurora borealis tonight and tomorrow night over North America. It also shows a ‘viewline’ that represents the southern-most locations from which you may see the aurora on the northern horizon,” the NOAA said.
“(Jun 30 to Jul 2) The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on Jun 30 (30 Jun) and quiet to active levels on days two and three (01 Jul, 02 Jul).”
Meanwhile, social media users posted pictures of northen lights over the famous Ontario lake on Friday.
Keep in mind that aurora forecasts are not exact, and cloud cover can always obscure the view. Here are some additional tips for aurora chasers:
Get away from light pollution. Head for rural areas with little to no artificial light.
Check the weather forecast. You won’t be able to see the aurora if it’s cloudy.
Dress warmly. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially in northern Canada.
