Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 18 seed, reached the third round of Wimbledon by edging out Australian Daria Saville 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday.
It was a dramatic encounter that saw the Ukrainian rally from a set and 5-2 down to triumph. Kostyuk saved a match point when Saville served for the win a second time at 6-5, ad-in. Eventually she converted her eighth break point to force a tiebreak.
Kostyuk saved a pair of break points to hold for 5-3 in the third set, then converted her sixth match point to finally close out the victory in three hours and 12 minutes.
Kostyuk, ranked No 19, will face American Madison Keys, the No 12 seed, next.
The 22-year-old is into the third round at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year – she has never reached the second week at SW19.
In the previous round of The Championships, the 22-year-old Ukrainian won against Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (6-3, 6-2).
Saville, ranked No 82, beat American Peyton Stearns (6-4, 6-2) in the first round of The Championships.
