Dungannon Swifts player Kealan Dillon says his side won’t let their disappointing last-gasp 2-1 defeat by Portadown affect their confidence too much after an otherwise bright start to the season.
Dillon has been one of the star performers as Swifts occupied a berth in the top six of the Irish Premiership table after winning three and drawing one of their first six matches.
However on Friday night, Danny Wallace’s 13th-minute goal was cancelled out by Abu Obhakhan in the second half, then Ben Wylie popped up with the winner five minutes into stoppage time.
“I don’t think we were good enough tonight. I think the boys were honest enough to look at ourselves and we probably didn’t do enough to win the game,” commented Dillon.
“We were in control in the first half, go in 1-0 up, but the game gets a bit loose second half, we tried to force things, gave up too many chances.
“We gave the ball away far too often and that gave them a chance to get back into the game. They got a goal, got back to one each and they’re in the ascendancy then so it’s hard to wrestle the momentum back again.”
Dungannon’s next league game is against Crusaders at Stangmore Park on Tuesday.
“To concede in the last minute obviously hurts a little bit more. The boys are all upset but this is football, we’ve had a great start to the season and we won’t let this affect us too much.
“We don’t fear anyone in this league. You can see from the games we’ve had at the start of the season that we’re more than a match for anyone when we’re on our game. Obviously we’ll need a better performance on Tuesday but there’s no better opportunity to put it right.”
