When Jasprit Bumrah thought about immigrating to Canada
Star Indian fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is one of the top bowlers in all three formats, once thought of migrating to Canada for better opportunities, long before he rose to fame as one of the leading pacers in the cricket world. Bumrah burst onto the Indian cricket scene during a time when fast bowling was gaining prominence, quickly establishing himself as a pivotal figure in this evolution. His unconventional bowling action proved to be a puzzle for opposition batters across Test matches, T20s, and ODIs, making him a standout in the realm of pace bowling. He is currently at No 3 in the ICC Test bowling ranking and at No 5 in the ODI bowling ranking. Earlier this year, he became the first Indian bowler to rank No 1 in test bowling ranking. In a candid interview with his wife, Sanjana Ganesan on Jio Cinema, Bumrah humorously revealed his initial contemplation of playing for the Canadian cricket team as a potential backup plan. Reflecting on his past discussions with his family about relocating to Canada for career security, Bumrah shared, “Every boy dreams of making it big in cricket, but having a backup plan is essential. Initially, we considered moving to Canada, but my mother’s reservations about the cultural differences steered us in a different direction.”
Fortunately, Bumrah’s decision to stay in India proved to be fortuitous, leading him to become a linchpin in both the national team and his IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians. Recalling his journey with Mumbai Indians since joining at the age of 19, Bumrah expressed gratitude for the opportunities and successes he has experienced, including five IPL championship victories.
In September last year, Bumrah and his wife welcomed their son, Angad Jasprit Bumrah, bringing immense joy to the cricketer’s life. Speaking about fatherhood, Bumrah shared, “Seeing Angad’s smile is the most precious feeling for me. It’s all I need to feel content.”
With an impressive record of 382 wickets in 187 games across all formats for India and 150 wickets in 124 games for Mumbai Indians, Bumrah has solidified his position as a top bowling option. His journey from contemplating a move to Canada to becoming a stalwart in Indian cricket serves as a testament to his dedication and perseverance in the sport.
