Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busbee reacts to Xander Schauffele’s exquisite final round at Royal Troon to win his second career major title.
There are a bunch of different ways that you can win a major in golf.
You can overwhelm the course, you can outdo your rivals head to head or you can wait for your moment, put the gas down and put everybody in the rearview mirror.
And that’s exactly what Xander Shaley did on Sunday at the British Open at Royal Troon.
He went and used a six birdies and 11 hole streak to flip a three shot deficit into a two stroke victory claim his second major of the season.
It was an exceptional performance from Shaley on a day that everyone else was pretty much stuck in neutral or sliding backward.
Shaley managed to find birdie after birdie and play some of the steadiest golf we’ve seen in a long, long time to claim that second major that puts him in pretty exclusive company at this point.
He’s the first guy to win two majors in the season since Brooks K in 2018.
And he’s only the fourth player to do it since 2000 to win both the open championship and the PGA championship in the same year.
He joins guys like Tiger Woods, Patrick Harrington Rory mcilroy in doing that.
And now he heads to Paris for the Olympics where he just happens to be the defending gold medal champion there.
So we’ll have to see how he does in Paris.
But at the moment, Xander Shaley riding on top of the world after a win at Royal Troon in the open championship.
